How to play

  1. Press Start. A colour word appears, printed in a coloured ink.
  2. Tap the button for the ink colour. Ignore what the word says.
  3. A wrong tap shows the right answer for a second, then the next word appears.
  4. Score as many right answers as you can in 30 seconds.

About this game

Color Clash plays on a well-known quirk of reading. When you see a word, you read it almost automatically, even when you are trying not to. So when the word RED is printed in blue ink and you are asked for the ink, part of you wants to answer red. The game is about catching yourself.

Most words clash with their ink, but about a quarter of them match, so you cannot simply answer the opposite of what you read. The four inks are red, blue, yellow, and green, chosen so they also differ in brightness. Each answer button shows its colour as a swatch and its name in your language.

Answers move on by themselves. A right tap brings the next word at once. A wrong tap shows which ink was correct for one second, then continues. After thirty seconds you see how many you got right and wrong, and your best score is saved in this browser.

It often helps to look at the edge of the letters rather than reading the word, or to blur your eyes slightly.

What this does not measure

This game is for fun. It is not an IQ test and it does not test colour vision, attention, or any health condition. If telling these colours apart is hard for you, the game may not be a fair challenge.
