How to play

  1. Press Start. The snake moves on its own.
  2. Steer with a swipe on the board, the arrow keys or WASD, or the arrow buttons.
  3. Eat the food to grow one block longer and score a point. Each bite makes the snake a little faster.
  4. Hitting a wall or your own body ends the game.

About this game

Pixel Snake is our take on one of the oldest arcade ideas. A short snake crawls across a fifteen by fifteen grid. You choose where it turns, and every block of food makes it longer. The longer it gets, the more of the board it fills and the harder it is to find a safe path.

Speed rises slowly. The snake starts at a relaxed pace and gets a little faster with each bite, but the speed is capped so the game stays playable on a phone. You can queue up to two turns at once, so a quick double swipe around a corner is not lost. Turning straight back into yourself is ignored rather than ending the game.

On a phone, swipe anywhere on the board or use the arrow buttons under it. On a computer, use the arrow keys or W, A, S, and D. The game pauses itself when you switch tabs or apps, and you can pause any time with the pause button. Your best score is saved in this browser.

A safe habit is to travel along the edges in long loops and cut inward only when the food is close. Leave yourself an exit before you turn into a tight space.
