How to play
- Press Start. The runner goes on their own and keeps getting faster.
- Tap Jump, or the right half of the scene, to jump. Tap again in the air to fire a grappling rope for a second, smaller jump.
- Hold Slide, or the left half of the scene, to duck under banners. Holding it in the air brings the runner down fast.
- Your score is how long you survive. Hitting anything or falling into a gap ends the run.
About this game
Rooftop Run is an endless runner set on the flat roofs of a city at dusk. A runner in goggles and a long orange scarf sprints from left to right without stopping, and your job is only to decide when they jump and when they duck. In mid-air they can fire a grappling rope from the wrist for one more boost. The roofs go on forever, built fresh for every run, so no two runs are the same, and your score is simply the time you stay alive.
The first seconds are gentle: low crates to hop, gaps between buildings to jump from close to the edge, and banners hanging on ropes that you slide under. After five seconds barrels start rolling toward you, so jump a little sooner than you would for a crate, and long low crates appear that need an early jump. From twelve seconds come stacks of two crates, which need a jump and then a second jump on the way up; drones hovering at the height of a jump, so stay on the roof and let them pass over; and low-flying birds heading straight at you, which you slide under. From twenty seconds there are also chimneys, narrow and taller than a crate, which need a well-timed jump or a double jump.
After twenty seconds the course starts throwing two obstacles in a row, such as a crate right after a banner, a barrel before a banner, or two gaps back to back, and after forty seconds sometimes three. There is always just enough room to land and act again, but not much more. The runner starts quick and keeps speeding up for about a minute before it levels off at a fast top speed.
Every course is checked by a test that runs a simple autopilot over it for two minutes, so every obstacle can be cleared. On a phone, the left half of the scene slides and the right half jumps, the same as the two pads below it. On a computer, use Space, W, or the up arrow to jump and the down arrow or S to slide. If you switch tabs the game pauses, and your best time is saved in this browser.
